The figure is an expert estimate rather than an exact measurement: HRT and Reuters describe it as 'approximately 37,000 tons', while Jutarnji list reports expert estimates of up to 64,000 cubic metres, i.e. 'more than 37,000 tonnes of material'.
A separate USKOK indictment covers about 35,000 tonnes of hazardous waste spread across three sites (Varaždin, Gospić and Benkovac), a different scope from the 37,000 tonnes attributed specifically to the Gospić/Bilajska Street location.
The claim was made on 2026-09-17; several of the reporting sources found (e.g. The Guardian, 2026-09-25) were published after the session date, although they describe events and data preceding it.
