The 'nearly 500' figure matches the initial RIVM estimate (~480 deaths for the week of 22–28 June) that was available around the session date of 8 July 2026; RIVM later revised the peak-week excess deaths upward by more than 100 (to 586) and reported 911 excess deaths for the full 22 June – 5 July period, figures published in mid-July 2026 (after the session date but covering a period on or before it).
Provisional CBS (Dutch national statistics office) figures recorded more than 3,500 deaths during the extreme-heat week, far exceeding the claimed figure.
The other country figures in the same sentence (France 'more than 2,000', Belgium 'more than 1,200', Spain 'more than 1,000') also appear to understate later cumulative tallies reported for the 2026 heatwave (AFP's analysis found at least 12,000 excess deaths across Europe in the June heatwave alone), though only the Netherlands component was verified here.
