Spain is a leader in renewables, but around 90% of its electricity grid is saturated.

The most recent pre-session figure (Foro Industria y Energía, September 2026) is 86.5% of substations, i.e. slightly below the 'around 90%' cited; the claim rounds the figure up.
The 86.5% refers specifically to the saturation of substation connection capacity, not to the grid's overall physical utilisation; the distribution network is measured at 83.4% of nodes saturated, and only about 25% of transport-network nodes can connect new demand.
All the saturation percentages derive from a single private analysis (Foro Industria y Energía's capacity maps), not from an official statistics body such as Red Eléctrica or a national statistics office, so no fully independent data source corroborates the exact percentage.
The companion assertion that Spain 'is a leader in renewables' is broadly supported (renewables account for roughly 66% of installed capacity) but is not the metric under review.
