The EUR 8.09–8.5 million is the total budget of a multi-year GIZ project on energy efficiency and employment promotion in mosques and public buildings; LED lighting was only one component among training, advisory services, PV and solar thermal installations.
Roughly EUR 5.99 million of the project volume went to personnel costs, according to the BMZ's answer to the AfD's parliamentary question.
The project is closed (duration 01/2015–05/2021); the most recent authoritative data is the BMZ answer to Kleine Anfrage 20/12899 (Bundestag Drucksache 20/13423) from late 2024. No 2025 or 2026 data exists because no new funding for this project was decided, so the 2024 figures remain the most recent available before the session date of 2026-10-20.
The Moroccan side also contributed in kind (premises, customs and tax exemptions) valued at an estimated EUR 400,000, and the government reported no misuse of funds.
