The exact percentage depends on the reference price and date: the Financial Times reports a base of about €32/MWh 'on the eve of the Iran war' (end of February 2026), while European gas exceeded €80/MWh in September and reached €87/MWh by mid-October, implying an increase of roughly 150–170%, above the 140% claimed.
Different sources give different magnitudes for different baselines and periods: IEEFA states EU gas prices 'doubled since January 2026' (~100%), Ember reports that gas-fired power costs rose 'more than 50%' since 28 February, and Trading Economics reports a year-on-year rise of about 174%.
Most sources describing the September–October 2026 price level were published after the session date of 6 October 2026, so the MEP could only have inferred the figure from contemporaneous market data.
