The Temu fine (€200 million) was issued on 28 May 2026, which fits the 'just before this summer' framing, but the AliExpress fine (€550 million) was issued on 20 July 2026, i.e. during summer, not before it.
The stated grounds ('counterfeit and toxic substances') are a simplification: the Commission cited failure to assess and mitigate risks from illegal and unsafe products (including unsafe toys and non-compliant products) in the Temu decision, and illegal/counterfeit goods in the AliExpress decision.
Both fines were imposed under the Digital Services Act (DSA), a detail the MEP omitted.
