The 50% tariff was imposed in June 2025 under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, replacing the earlier 25% steel and 10% aluminium tariffs from 2018.
The August 2025 EU-US trade framework reduced tariffs on most other industrial goods to a maximum of 15%, but steel and aluminium were explicitly excluded and remain at the full 50% rate.
A White House proclamation of 1 June 2026 further adjusted Section 232 tariff regimes, creating differentiated categories; some sub-categories of steel and aluminium articles may be subject to a 25% rate under Annex I-B, while the core 50% rate remains on most steel and aluminium imports.
The MEP did not cite a specific source for the tariff figure.
