Omissions

• The claimed figure (6,000 km²) is a rounded approximation; the EFFIS/JRC figure for the 2026 season as of 16 September 2026 is 668,035 hectares, i.e. about 6,680 km², roughly 11% higher than claimed.
• The comparison 'an area the size of Luxembourg' is factually wrong: the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg has an area of only 2,586 km², so the burned area is more than twice the size of Luxembourg.
• The 'size of Luxembourg' trope was already circulating in the media in July 2026 (e.g. Euronews), when the mapped burned area was substantially lower (~344,580 ha by 26 July), so the comparison does not correspond to the September cumulative figure.
• The EFFIS cumulative figure is year-to-date and covers Europe (EU plus neighbouring countries), not only the meteorological summer, so the strictly 'summer' portion may be somewhat lower than the 668,035 ha cumulative total.
